Domain Registration
Registering a domain is not difficult task however you must consider following points before selecting a right domain registrar.
1) Cost
Cost is obviously the main point for selecting a right domain registrar. Now a days you can get a domain name as cheap as $5.99 or even less for .com domain. There is no point in paying more for just registering domains provided you get most of the common features provided by a typical domain registrar some of which are discussed in following sections.
2) Domain Management
Before registering a domain you must check what kind of domain management tools are offered by registrar. The most common features you need are
- Name Server Management
- Domain/URL Forwarding
- A/C/MX Record Management
3) Private Whois / ID Shield
If you wish to hide your personal details then you must get a private whois which is typically offered by most of registrar. The private whois rule varies from country to country. E.g. in UK a company can’t opt to hide who is info whereas a person can do so.
Some Registrars also call it ID shield.
4) Domain Transfer
It shall not be mentioned as all domain registrars should easily provide you Authentication Code for domain transfer. However there might be some registrars who create problems when asked for Authentication Code.
5) Domain Parking
This feature is most likely to be provided by a domain registrar who also offer Web Hosting solution. You can park your domain for later use or for sale.
6) Domain Registrars
99% of domain registrars you see quite often are domain resellers and not the main registrars. The main domain registrars are called Accredited Registrar and you can get the complete list of Accredited Registrars on http://www.internic.net/regist.html
